Argyrophenga antipodum : ウィキペディア英語版 | Argyrophenga antipodum
''Argyrophenga antipodum'', otherwise known by its common names, the Common tussock,〔(Patrick & Patrick, 2012)〕 or the Tussock ringlet,〔(EOL, n.d.)〕 is a species of butterfly which can be commonly found in the South Island of New Zealand. ==Description==
''Argyrophenga antipodum'' is approximately 12-17mm long with a wingspan of about 35-45mm.〔(Early, 2009)〕 Male and female common tussock butterflies are quite different in body shape, as females are shorter and have more rounded bodies compared to the males.〔(Craw, 1978)〕 Common tussock butterflies have very distinct markings on the underside of their wings 〔(O'Brien, 1985)〕 they are described as silver streaks and give the butterflies an advantage when it comes to camouflaging.〔(Lindsay & Morris, 2000)〕 The butterfly itself is a brown and red color, with distinctive eye like markings, this is believed to be through evolution to help prey from attacking. The different sexes are colored differently with the males being darker in color and having more red and brown on them and the females are more of a yellow colour,〔(Early, 2009)〕 but have very similar patterns or markings on their topside and underside.〔(Craw, 1978)〕
